The Great Saltair

When the original Saltair pavilion opened in 1893, it was meant to be the Coney Island of the West: a colossal Moorish palace rising out of the Great Salt Lake on two thousand pilings, where families could dance, swim, and float in water saltier than the ocean. What followed instead reads like a curse with a schedule. The pavilion burned to the ground in 1925. Its replacement was battered by fires, windstorms, and the receding lake, then burned again in 1970 while standing abandoned. The third Saltair, built in 1981, promptly flooded when the lake reversed course and rose sixteen feet. Four buildings, one property, and a persistent local belief that the land itself wants no permanent tenant.

The darkest chapter is the most recent. In 2000, human remains were found near the property, a young woman known for years only as Saltair Sally. It took over a decade to identify her as Nikole Bakoles, and the case remains unsolved. Her presence, along with more than a century of accumulated disaster, is central to the site's haunted reputation. Today Saltair operates as a concert venue, and staff and performers report disembodied voices, shadow figures on the empty floor, and equipment that behaves as though someone unseen is handling it.

Ghost Adventures S22E01 — "The Great Saltair Curse" (2021)

Zak Bagans chose Saltair to open Season 22, and the episode earned its premiere slot. Almost immediately after arriving, the crew began suffering physical afflictions: nausea, headaches, and a heaviness that multiple team members described independently. The investigation documented disembodied voices on the venue floor, unexplained figures moving through the building, and responses that seemed to reference the property's long chain of disasters. The episode leans into the theory that the land around the lake's south shore is genuinely cursed, amplifying whatever energy is present, and by the end of the lockdown even the skeptical viewers in the fanbase were conceding it ranks among the show's more unsettling openers.

Fear Factory

Some haunted locations have to work for their atmosphere. Fear Factory was assigned the street address 666 and went from there. The sprawling complex began life around the turn of the twentieth century as the Portland Cement Works, a dangerous industrial plant where workers died in documented accidents, including falls into the machinery that the attraction's staff will describe to you in more detail than you asked for. After decades of abandonment, the property was reborn as one of Utah's largest haunted attractions, which means every October, actors pretend to be the very thing that employees say is already there.

The reports that drew national attention went beyond the usual footsteps and cold spots. Staff described aggressive, demonic activity that escalated sharply after employees allegedly recited passages from a satanic bible inside the building, a detail that manages to be both extremely Utah and extremely ill-advised. Workers reported being touched, scratched, and followed, with activity concentrated in the old furnace areas and the towers where the fatal accidents occurred.

Ghost Adventures S09E05 — "Fear Factory" (2014)

The Season 9 investigation stands as one of the more intense episodes of that era of the show. Zak, Nick, and Aaron documented violent physical responses during the lockdown, captured EVPs consistent with the reported demonic presence, and interviewed employees whose accounts of the satanic bible readings and subsequent attacks frame the episode. The crew treated the site less like a residual industrial haunting and more like an active, provoked one, and the footage from the old cement works' upper levels remains a talking point among fans of the season.

The Industrial District Ritual Building

Salt Lake City's west-side industrial district is over a century old, a grid of brick warehouses and workshops built during the railroad boom, and one of those buildings kept a secret in its basement for a very long time. The current owners only learned about it because of a break-in. Burglars forced their way into a sealed section of the basement and uncovered the remnants of what investigators describe as a dark ritual site: markings, arranged objects, and evidence that someone had been conducting ceremonies beneath a working business.

What happened next is the part that got Ghost Adventures on a plane. After the basement was disturbed, activity in the building spiked dramatically. Business owners and employees reported shadow figures crossing open floors in daylight hours, objects moving, and an oppressive presence that several workers refused to be alone with. The pattern, a dormant site abruptly activated by disturbance, is one paranormal researchers flag as among the most dangerous configurations there is.

Ghost Adventures S20E09 — "Industrial District of the Damned" (2020)

Zak and the crew centered their investigation on the desecrated basement, and it delivered. The episode documents shadow figures, violent EVPs, and physical responses tied directly to the ritual site, with the team concluding that whatever the ceremonies were feeding did not appreciate the interruption. The episode holds one of the highest IMDB ratings of the show's Salt Lake City investigations, and it is the rare Ghost Adventures entry where the scariest evidence is the stuff the burglars found before the cameras ever arrived.

Fielding Garr Ranch, Antelope Island ("Ghost Island")

Antelope Island is the largest island in the Great Salt Lake, a strange, beautiful place where free-roaming bison outnumber people and the silence gets noticed. At its southeastern edge sits the Fielding Garr Ranch, established in 1848 and continuously occupied for over a century before becoming part of the state park. It is the oldest Anglo-built structure in Utah still on its original foundation, and according to a long line of visitors, staff, and investigators, it is very much still occupied.

Locals call it Ghost Island, and the reports go well past atmosphere. Visitors describe being scratched, shoved, and overwhelmed by sudden dread inside the ranch buildings. Stories of unmarked graves on the property and whispers of a curse on the island itself have circulated for decades, fed by the ranch's long, hard history of isolation, death, and burial far from any town. The island's remoteness cuts both ways: there is nothing out there to explain the activity, and nowhere to go when it starts.

Ghost Adventures S25E03 — "Ghost Island" (2023)

The crew investigated in the dead of winter, pushing through a blizzard to reach the ranch, which gave the episode a siege-like quality even before anything paranormal happened. Once inside, Zak documented some of the most aggressive responses the team had encountered in years: direct physical contact, hostile EVPs, and an entity the team interpreted as territorial rather than residual. The unmarked graves and the island's curse lore hang over the whole investigation, and the episode ends with the strong impression that whatever holds the ranch considers visitors a temporary inconvenience.

Asylum 49 (Old Tooele Hospital)

Thirty minutes west of Salt Lake City, the old Tooele Hospital opened in 1953 in a building whose history reaches back to 1873, and for decades it did what hospitals do: people were born there, people were treated there, and a great many people died there. When the hospital moved to a modern facility, the old building split into one of the stranger arrangements in American paranormal real estate. Half became a working nursing home. The other half became Asylum 49, a full-contact haunted attraction. The residents and the actors shared a roof, and if the reports are accurate, so did something else.

Staff and investigators describe a rich cast: a little girl named Jessica, a nurse who continues her rounds, shadow figures in the halls, and darker entities concentrated in the old emergency and surgical wings. The attraction's owners lean into it, running public investigations alongside the Halloween operation, and the location has become a fixture of Utah paranormal culture.

Ghost Adventures S05E08 — "Tooele Hospital" (2011) and S18E05 — "Asylum 49" (2017)

Ghost Adventures investigated twice, six years apart, which makes this location a rare controlled experiment in whether hauntings intensify. The 2011 visit documented what the crew characterized as demonic entities in the original hospital wings. The 2017 return found the activity had escalated dramatically since the haunted attraction moved in, with the standout evidence including something visibly grabbing Aaron's ear on camera and a full shadow figure witnessed in person by the crew. The comparison between the two episodes is the argument, in miniature, for the theory that theatrical fear feeds real activity.

The Magna Poltergeist House

Magna grew up in the shadow of the smelters and mills that processed ore from the Bingham Canyon mine, and like most company towns of that era, it buried more than its share of workers. The community's history of industrial accidents and traumatic deaths is exactly the kind of substrate that The Dead Files' format is built to excavate: Steve DiSchiavi works the archives while psychic medium Amy Allan walks the property cold, and the two compare notes at the end.

In this case, a family reported a dangerous poltergeist terrorizing their home with violent physical manifestations, activity aggressive enough that they feared for their children. DiSchiavi's research pulled up Magna's catastrophic industrial past and the deaths woven through the surrounding community. Allan, walking the house with no knowledge of any of it, independently identified a destructive entity tied to traumatic deaths in the area. The episode earned an 8.4 IMDB rating, placing it among the stronger entries of the show's later seasons, and it stands as a reminder that Salt Lake valley hauntings are not confined to famous buildings. Some of them have a mortgage.

Rio Grande Depot & The Purple Lady

The Rio Grande Depot opened in 1910 as the Denver & Rio Grande Western's grand answer to Union Pacific's station up the street, a Beaux-Arts monument to the era when the railroad decided who lived and who was stranded. Long after the last passenger train left, the building housed the Utah State Historical Society, and it is the historical society's own staff who kept the ghost stories alive: lights turning themselves on and off, doors slamming in empty corridors, objects displaced overnight, and paintings found hanging crooked in the morning.

The star of the depot is the Purple Lady, Salt Lake City's most famous apparition. The story goes that a young woman argued with her fiancé on the platform, and her engagement ring ended up on the tracks. She went down after it, and the train arrived. She is described consistently across decades of sightings: long jet-black hair, a vintage purple dress, most often glimpsed in the hallway between the main station and the cafe. There is a complication worth reporting honestly, because that is the job: a Utah Historical Society staffer once claimed a colleague invented the Purple Lady in the early 1980s on the theory that every old building needs a ghost story. And yet the sightings, including reports from people who never heard the legend, have continued regardless. Either the depot's ghost predates her own origin story, or Salt Lake City talked a ghost into existing. Neither option is entirely comfortable.
